The Science of Learning at St Matthew's

Learning needs to be designed around how children's brains develop and learn. This approach is known as the science of learning and it guides the way teachers plan lessons, support students and help every child build confidence and experience success.

The Science of Learning is not a program or a trend. It is a research‑informed approach that helps teachers understand:

In primary school, this means lessons are intentional, structured and supportive, while still being engaging, joyful and age‑appropriate.

What Does This Look Like in the Classroom?
    Clear and Purposeful Teaching

Teachers clearly explain what children are learning, why it matters, and what success looks like. This helps students feel secure and confident, especially in the early years when routines and clarity are essential.

    Building Strong Foundations

Children learn best when new knowledge builds on what they already know. Teachers carefully sequence learning so that skills in reading, writing, mathematics and inquiry develop step by step, without gaps or confusion.

    Practice That Builds Confidence

Students are given plenty of opportunities to practise new skills in different ways. This repetition is not boring – it helps learning become automatic, freeing children’s thinking for deeper understanding and creativity.

Why This Matters for Your Child

A Science of Learning approach helps children:

    • feel confident and capable as learners
    • develop strong literacy and numeracy foundations understand how to learn, not just what to learn
    • build resilience and independence
    • experience success that grows over time.

Most importantly, it helps children see themselves as successful learners who are supported, understood and challenged appropriately.
