Established in 1984 by the Sisters of St Joseph we continue to foster the traditions and spirit of Saint Mary MacKillop and the Josephite Sisters.

St Matthew's contributes to and builds on over 150 years of Catholic Education in Queensland. Ours is a three stream school of 560 students from Prep - Year 6. We are proud of our extensive and comprehensive school facilities and of our dedicated staff who are committed to life-long learning for our students. In addition to the subjects outlined in the Australian Curriculum we also offer Religious Education.

We hope that Religious Education is more than a subject in that it guides our community and permeates all that we do at St Matthew's. We also have a range of activities designed to enhance and balance our curriculum and provide as much opportunity as we can for the children in our care. To support the work of classroom teachers we have specialist staff in the areas of Physical Education, Music, LOTE (Spanish in Years 5 & 6), Learning Support (including enrichment), Library, Curriculum Development and Information & Communication Technology (ICLT).

Since 2011 we have been progressively engaging in the new Australian curriculum beginning with Mathematics & English in 2011 and Science in 2012. Our extra-curricular activities include: Junior and Senior Choir, School Band, Instrumental Music Program, Violin lessons, Keyboard lessons, Guitar lessons, a wide range of sporting opportunities, Junior Rock Eisteddfod, Drama Club, Chess Club and a variety of opportunities for students displaying particular gifts and talents.

Our school Annual Plan targets, amongst other priorities, the improvement of the ICLTs. Our school has an extensive wireless network system, all classrooms have an up-to-date data projector - laptop - sound system set-up, and all classrooms have interactive digital whiteboards. St Matthew's has two computer labs and we have ipads and over 150 laptops throughout the school – each year level has access to at least 15 laptops.

St Matthew's promotes Gospel values through the enhancement of the social climate of the school. We have a whole school buddy program where older students team with younger students to enhance learning and offer support. We have a proactive resilience program which focuses on positive behaviour and targets bullying. Our Pastoral Care Worker and our Guidance Officer provide support to individual students and to classes. We take the opportunities presented at our weekly assemblies to reinforce values and behaviours that our CARE expectations - Cooperation, Acting safely, Respect & Effort. Many of our Year 6 students volunteer for pastoral care activities, such as helping younger children in the playground, or supervising games in the library.

At St Matthew's we are well-supported by the parent community. The St Matthew's parent community lives the Mary MacKillop motto of “never seeing a need without doing something about it” and is well known for raising funds for those less fortunate. We have a very active Parents and Friends Association. Parents support school life in many ways including: reading, perceptual motor program, library assistants, Parents Friends fundraising, crossing supervisors, classroom help, sport's day officials, tuckshop helpers, excursion supervisors etc. Our School Board assists with the development of policy and budget.

As you browse our website I hope you gain a sense of the caring community that we strive to be. Mary MacKillop Muralhttp://www.stmatthews.qld.edu.au/latest-news/Pages/Mary-MacKillop-Mural.aspxMary MacKillop Mural
This artistic mural of Mary MacKillop, which has been installed at the front of our school, tells the story of how, as a community, we at St Matthew’s can build on Mary’s charism together to make our school a positive and welcoming Catholic community. And, just as all of these broken tiles fit in together to make the artwork beautiful, we too, in our brokenness, can celebrate how our unique personalities, strengths, weaknesses, interests, cultural backgrounds, beliefs, dreams, and goals are what makes this community beautiful.

We thank Sue Keaveny, for her artistic guidance and time, Peter Keaveny, for installing the frame, The Parents and Friends Association, for your donation of $1000 towards the mural, the staff at St Matt’s for laying tiles and the Year Six students for laying tiles.
