Feedback Survey Survey<div>A couple of weeks ago I mentioned we would be asking for some feedback to help guide some decision making for the coming years at St Matthew's. </div> <div> </div> <div>Below is a link to a short survey which shouldn't take you too long. We'd appreciate your thoughts.</div> <div><a href=""></a></div>
Our Lady of Fatima Visitation Lady of Fatima Visitation<div><img alt="OLOF visitation.jpg" src="/latest-news/PublishingImages/OLOF%20visitation.jpg" style="height:408px;width:571px;margin:5px;" /><br>Our school was visited by a group of missionary nuns with an image (statue) of Our Lady of Fatima (Mother Mary). These nuns are travelling around Australia with the image, which was blessed by Pope Francis, to teach schools, shelters, hospitals and anyone who will listen about the apparition of Mary in 1917 to 3 shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal. Our Lady’s message to those children and to the whole world, is to pray and repair wrongs done in our lives. She said this is the way to restore peace in the world and holiness in family life.</div> <div>Our students learnt were very reverent and respectful during the procession of Our Lady and the catechetical sessions led by the nuns.</div>
LOTE News - Spanish News - Spanish<div><img class="ms-rtePosition-2" alt="hola.png" src="/latest-news/PublishingImages/hola.png" style="height:225px;width:300px;margin:5px;" />This term has definitely been a massive one. On 13 August, for the first time, St Matthew's was invited to participate in the Spanish Contest at Griffith University.  I am so proud of how Emily, Jessica, Bharat, Leon,  and Solene performed on the day, as they represented their respectives courses as well as our school. The commitment and effort of these students was reflected in their results. The judge was very impressed with the quality of the language skills these students have gained in nearly two years of Spanish study. I was so glad to receive positive feedback from both the students and parents about their experience.</div> <div> </div> <div>On the other hand, this term the students of Year 5 and 6 will perform their first Spanish exam, which will be a great opportunity for students to demonstrate to themselves how much Spanish they have learned. I would like to encourage the students to develop good study habits and to take Spanish beyond the classroom. For this reason, I would highly recommend any of the free language learning tools available for their specific device, such as duolingo, spanishdict, Babbel, busuu and so on. Or by visiting <a href="http://www.languagesonline.victoria/">www.languagesonline.victoria</a>. Using these resources at home is quite useful allowing students to continue developing their four macro-skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking).</div> <div> </div> <div>If parents would like to talk to me about their children’s achievements, feel free to come along to the staffroom on Tuesdays or Thursdays at 8:30 am. It would be a pleasure for me to see you there.</div> <div> </div> <div>Hasta la Vista,</div> <div><em>Patricia Pinilla</em></div> <div><em>Spanish Teacher</em></div>
Celebrating St Mary of the Cross MacKillop St Mary of the Cross MacKillop<h2>On 8 August, Catholics celebrated the Feast Day of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop. Mary MacKillop is Australia’s first canonized Saint. She is the Patron Saint of the Archdiocese of Brisbane and founded many schools across Australia to provide an education to the poor and those in most need.  </h2> <div><img width="301" height="233" src="" alt="" style="float:left;margin:5px 10px 5px 0px;" />In December, 1869, Mary MacKillop and five of the Sisters of St Joseph came to Brisbane and rented a house in South Brisbane. During 1870, they opened three schools for the poorer children in Brisbane and one in Maryborough. Mary and her companions attended Mass at St Stephen’s Church in Elizabeth Street and often prayed there before the Blessed Sacrament.</div> <div>Born in Melbourne in 1842 and fired by a deep desire to serve God and help alleviate the plight of the poor, Mary was an ordinary person who lived a holy life. At a time when real heroes are in short supply, St Mary of the Cross MacKillop is a true inspiration. Her heroism is all the more firm because it is built not on celebrity or sporting skill but on her love for Jesus Christ and a life of dedication to God and her fellow human beings.</div> <div>She was an inspirational woman … Among her many qualities was her ability to inspire hope in those she met.</div> <div>Her motto of ‘never see a need without doing something about it’ continues to call us forth to action.</div> <h2>St Matthew’s is a Josephite school and we hope to continue the charism of St Mary MacKillop as we strive to live in faith, knowledge and love.</h2>

There were some wonderful costumes and a great time was had by all. We appreciate all the time and effort that goes into creating these costumes. It will be an experience that the students will always remember.</p> <div>We would also like to congratulate Jakey Lloyd on winning the colouring-in competition. He was thrilled to receive his $10 Book Fair voucher.</div> <div> </div> <div>Don't forget to check out the great displays on classroom doors and in the library. Our Book Fair will finish at 9:00am this Friday, so be sure to pop in for a bargain.</div> <div> </div> <div>We've had two interesting and inspirational talks by our visiting author, Michael Gerard Bauer and illustrator, Kerry Argent and the Year 3 to 6 students are looking forward to learning more about Ben Wood's illustrations.</div> <div> </div>

It would be an understatement to say that she was overwhelmed with your generosity. She and her team have filled the cupboards and have had to give the extra items that wouldn’t fit to Blind Eye Ministries (a South Brisbane based Catholic homeless drop in centre).</div> <div> </div> <div>I want to thank you sincerely for your generosity. Not only have you helped people in need but you have taught your children the importance of giving to people who really need it. Thank you!</div></div>

Ash Wednesday Wednesday<p><img class="ms-rteImage-1 ms-rtePosition-2" alt="ashwednesday.jpg" src="/latest-news/PublishingImages/ashwednesday.jpg" style="margin:5px;" />Next Wednesday, we celebrate Ash Wednesday.  Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent which continues until the Holy Thursday.  The mark of ashes, a symbol of repentance, is given to Christians to indicate the start of the penitential season of Lent.  Ashes are etched in the sign of the cross on the foreheads of Catholics around the world on Ash Wednesday, symbolising the beginning of the 40 days of fasting and penance in preparation for Easter. Lent is a 40 day fast and penance period in the Catholic Church.  </p> <p><br>During Lent, the church is draped in violet.  This time is a time of sorrow, penitence and preparation as well as a time to go the extra mile.  It is a time of preparation for and renewal of baptism. A common devotion for Lent is praying the Stations of the Cross. </p>

Whole School Focus - Week 7 School Focus - Week 7<div><strong><em>"We don’t become wiser, more patient, more self-disciplined, more truthful, more courageous, more forgiving persons automatically. We do so by deliberately striving to be that kind of person."</em></strong></div> <div style="height:4px;width:100%;float:left;margin:0px;"></div> <div>Wouldn’t it be a wonderful world if everyone possessed these qualities? I sincerely hope that we are able to teach our children so that they too can deliberatly strive to be that type of person.</div> <div> </div> <div>At St Matthew’s we endeavour to do this through our ‘Positive Behaviour for Learning’ plans. The qualities listed above are actively taught in the school. I wanted to particularly focus on the last one mentioned in being a forgiving person. All people make mistakes! The children make mistakes regularly but as a school, we need to ensure these become learning experiences so they can move on from what might have been a poor choice. The process of forgiveness follows 4 basic steps. Admit, Sorry, Make-up, Forgive. The 1st step is probably the hardest in admitting we have done something wrong. </div> <div> </div> <div>Once we move through that point the need to say sorry and make-up are more natural steps and ultimately the process of forgiveness or reconciliation follows. In dealing with any behaviour issues at school we try to follow these four steps so there is a lot of dialogue between staff and students when something does go wrong. Hopefully, we can stop any potential problems by consciously teaching behaviours that reflect the above qualities. This is taught in classrooms and at a whole school level each week with our whole school focus. Please keep an eye out for them and talk with your children about the focus for the week as this will only help reinforce the message.</div>
